Family policies

Whether you may watch, what to wear, who collects and how photos are handled.

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

Watching class and recitals

Parents of dancers 8 to 11 are welcome to watch from the bench outside Room A for the last ten minutes of any class, and the first class of every session is a watch day for everyone. Teens and adults choose whether to be watched. Cypher night is open to families all evening. You may film your own dancer from the bench without flash, and please keep other dancers out of the shot.

What to wear and bring

Wear what you can move in: a t-shirt or hoodie, loose pants or shorts, and clean sneakers that stay in the studio. Breaking is easier in long pants and a long-sleeve top, and knee pads are welcome. Hair is tied back, and loose jewelry stays at home. There are no costumes and no costume sizes.

When to keep your child home

Please keep your dancer home with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, and until they have been well for a full day. If a wrist, ankle or knee is sore, tell your teacher before class so they can change what you do.

Drop-off and pickup

A grown-up brings and collects every dancer under 12 and tells the teacher who is picking up. Dancers 12 and up may leave on their own if a parent has said so in writing when you register. The front door opens fifteen minutes before the first class, and we wait with any dancer until their ride arrives.

Screens and phones

Phones stay in bags during class. Please don't film other people's children without asking. We film class only on watch days and at showcase night, and only as the photos answer above describes. Teachers pick the music, and the youth classes use clean versions.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close for the winter holidays, the week of Thanksgiving and one week in spring that follows the Oakland schools. If the studio has to close for a power cut or another emergency, we text every family that day, and the class is made up later in the session.

Absences and late arrival

Text or call when a dancer will miss class. A missed class can be made up in another class at the same level and age group during the session. A dancer who arrives after warm-up joins quietly; if class is well under way, we will ask you to come back next week.

Still wondering?

Ask at the door, call the studio, or send a message.
